Assistant Professor Specialising in Applied Entomology

Academic Position at the Department of Zoology, Fish Production and Hydrobiology, Faculty of AgriSciences

Research area: applied entomology, using advanced statistical data analysis methods and mathematical modelling

The Department focuses on the study of biodiversity, ecology and taxonomy of selected groups of invertebrates, as well as conservation genetics and mammalian ecology, their impact on agriculture and forestry, and the study of animal pests and invasive species. Research in fisheries and hydrobiology focuses on key areas of freshwater fisheries, including fish farming, ichthyology and the management of running waters, as well as related hydrobiological issues, including all aspects of the ecology of aquatic environments and hydrobionts.

What will you be responsible for?

  • Teaching lectures, practical classes and field trips in zoology, entomology, ecology and biostatistics
  • Co-teaching courses in Czech and English
  • Supervising, consulting on and reviewing students’ theses
  • Examining students and assessing their knowledge
  • Developing teaching, research and creative activities in applied entomology, animal ecology and biostatistics
  • Actively participating in research projects and grant activities
  • Publishing results in professional and scientific journals and presenting them at conferences and seminars
  • Engaging in activities related to the university’s third mission

What do we expect from you?

  • A university degree at doctoral level (Ph.D.) in applied zoology or a related field
  • Excellent command of Czech and English, with the ability to publish in English
  • Experience teaching in Czech and English
  • Experience supervising students’ theses, at least in the capacity of a consultant
  • Experience actively participating in research projects and grant activities
  • A publication record demonstrated by relevant outputs
  • Experience using R and conducting advanced statistical data analysis
  • Computer literacy (MS Office and searching discipline-specific databases)
  • A proactive and responsible approach to work, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Attention to detail, reliability and organisational skills
  • A category B driving licence and active driving experience

What research experience do we require?

  • Experience working on projects related to entomology or applied zoology
  • Experience publishing in prestigious journals (Q1, Q2)
  • Experience with international collaboration

What would be an advantage?

  • Knowledge of additional foreign languages (French and German)
  • Experience with fluctuating asymmetry in animals
  • Experience leading seminars or practical classes
  • Effective communication skills
  • The ability to develop new ideas and improve existing solutions
